This page will help you find the answers to the FAQs about the features and functionality of the hipKey™. What is hipKey™?

hipKey™ is an advanced wireless proximity alarm, which connects to your iPhone® or iPad® using a low power connection. hipKey™ can also be used to keep track of other valuables like; keys, bags or even your children. Simply attach the device to the item of your choice and hipKey™ is ready to go.

hipKey™ is compatible with:

  • iPhone 5
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPad mini
  • iPad (4th gen)
  • iPad (3rd gen)

hipKey™ is currently not compatible with any other Smartphone devices.

How to carry my hipKey?

hipKey and iPhone / iPad connects via Bluetooth 4.0. The Bluetooth signal strength between the two devices are influenced by it's surroundings and different materials. E.g. walls, the human body and furniture etc. It is recommended that the user always carries hipKey and iPhone/iPad in a way where they are not blocked by the human body.

It is recommended to set the Alarm Distance to Long unless there is a special need for shorter Alarm distances.

How far is Short, Medium and Long Alarm distances?

Short 2-5 meters, Medium 15-20 meters and Long 30-50 meters.
Note that the actual distance depends on the surroundings hipKey is carried in. The human body, buildings, walls and other items all affect the Bluetooth range. Try not to have close body contact with your hipKey. If you decide to do so, it is recommended to always set the Alarm Distance to Long.

I get false alarms. What can I do about it?

False alarms can be caused by more issues:

Check and ensure your hipKey is successfully paired with iPhone / iPad. Besides the App shows connected, hipKey should also be registered and connected in the iOS Settings Bluetooth menu. To recover from an unsuccessful pairing follow the instructions in this video: Demo 2: How to recover from an unsuccessful pairing

If you get false alarms while being inside a Safe Zone, please try and increase the Safe Zone radius and see if that helps.

hipKey has been programmed to give a three beep notification if it is moved within a Safe Zone and not connected to iPhone / iPad. This discrete notification alert is there to remind you not to leave behind your iPhone / iPad in your Safe Zone. It is not a false Alarm.

Why does hipKey beep 2-3 times when inside a Safe Zone?

hipKey has been programmed to give a three beep notification if it is moved within a Safe Zone and not connected to iPhone / iPad. This discrete notification alert is there to remind you not to leave behind your iPhone / iPad in your Safe Zone. It is not a false Alarm.

The Safe Zone alert repeats every minute for 5 minutes and can be cancelled by pressing the Action Key.

How do I switch my hipKey™ on and off?

The hipKey™ can be switched on and off by holding down the power button for a couple of seconds. When you hear the beep and see the green LED blinking, the hipKey™ is switched on and ready to be paired with your iPhone® or iPad®. Please ensure you have installed the hipKey™ app before attempting to pair your iPhone® or iPad® with hipKey™.

How durable is the hipKey™?

The hipKey™ is made of high quality, durable materials specifically designed to be used on a daily basis.

What is the maximum range hipkey™ can reach?

hipKey™ uses Bluetooth 4.0 technology (also referred to as Bluetooth Smart) to reach a range of up to 50 meters. Please note that certain factors such as metal or concrete walls may reduce the device’s range.

Can I use my hipKey™ with my iPhone® and iPad®?

Yes, but not at the same time.

Can I connect more than one hipKey™ to my iPhone® or iPad®?

No, you can currently only use one hipKey™ per iDevice.

Do the batteries of the hipKey™ need to be replaced?

No, hipKey™ comes with a rechargeable long lasting battery. To recharge the battery, use the micro-USB cable included in the sales pack, and plug it into your iPhone or iPad wall charger. A full charge takes approximately 4 hours and will last between 2-4 weeks, depending on usage.

How do I charge hipKey?

Use the micro-USB cable included in the sales pack and plug it into the iPhone / iPad wall charger or a MacBook or PC.

Is the hipKey™ alarm easy to switch off?

Yes, when an alarm is set off, simply press the “Action Key” to mute the alarm. hipKey™ will automatically switch off the alarm if you move back into range.


How do I pair my hipKey?

Why won’t the Mode wheel allow me to change modes?

The Mode wheel is designed to make sure you don’t change modes by accident. To change modes, turn the wheel with your finger until it reaches the mode of your choice. To switch the selected mode on press the On-Off button.

How do I find the Mode wheel after I have changed the settings?

You can do this by either sliding up the Mode wheel with your finger or by pressing the settings button. After 30 seconds the wheel will automatically slide up.

Why won’t the mode on my hipKey™ change even though I have selected another mode?

After selecting your mode, you must switch the mode on by using the On-Off button in the upper right-hand corner of the hipKey™ app.

How does the proximity alarm work?

Using Bluetooth technology, hipKey™ will connect to your iPhone® or iPad®. Once this connection has been established, your iPhone® or iPad® will be able to measure the distance between itself and your hipKey™. If your hipKey™ moves beyond the alarm distance or out of range, an alarm will automatically be triggered.

What is short, medium and long Alarm Distances hipKey™?

The hipKey surroundings, the human body, buildings, walls etc. affects the Bluetooth signal.

Try out the different Alarm Distances and see what works best for you. Be aware that your body does influence the Bluetooth signal strength and therefore when you carry hipKey or iPhone / iPad in your pockets you might get alarms on Short and Medium Alarm distance.

What is Motion Mode?

hipKey™ has a built-in motion sensor that is automatically switched on when you select “Motion Mode”. If your hipKey™ is moved while in this mode, an alarm will be triggered. Perfect to keep track of your handbag or even monitor a sleeping child.

How does Safe Zone work?

Safe Zone is a patent pending feature that prevents your hipKey™ from triggering the alarm unnecessarily. Perfect for use at home or in the office.

The hipKey App creates the Safe Zone using the iPhone / iPad GPS system. When entering the Safe Zone, hipKey will mute all alarms regardless of the Alarm settings and actual distance between the devices.

hipKey can still sound a 2-3 beep Safe Zone notification, if it is moved while disconnected. This way the user is alerted that he or she is about to leave the Safe Zone without iPhone / iPad.

hipKey Safe Zones uses assisted GPS technology, wifi and Geofencing. The Safe Zone feature has been optimized to give a good experience without draining the iPhone / iPad battery.

Note: To improve accuracy of Safe Zones, Wi-Fi shall be enabled in the iOS Settings Wi-Fi menu.

Can hipKey™ help me find my child if they are out of my sight?

If your hipKey is connected, you can use the 'Find Me' feature to help locate your child, by listening after the Find Me sound.
